B is for Baba Yaga

Baba Yaga is the ultimate witchy crone. She flies straight out of Slavic folklore on her mortar, looking for children to kidnap and bring back to her chicken-leg hut.

I read about her as a kid. I'd love to read more about her now. You can't go wrong with creepy-wise-evil-awesome witches!

  1. I first heard about Baba Yaga when we lived in Macedonia for two years. Neighbors told their kids she'd snatch them if they didn't come home when they were supposed to. The kids returned on time!

  2. Creepy! Kind of like our Boogey Man? I wonder how she constructed her chicken leg hut?

  3. Visiting from the linky. Love the theme of monsters and that you are drawing too. Look forward to seeing what you come up with. I've got a scary one for G!

  5. I recently read one with her in it! Haunted, by Joy Preble.

  6. Kittie: I bet they did. I would've. That's awesome.

Heather: She is creepy, in a bogey-man sort of way! And I bet she used magic to make her hut. She seems big on magic.

Kirsty: Yay for visiting! I shall have to tread carefully at your G... :)

    M. Pax: She's scary, but in the best way possible. And sometimes, very occasionally, she's helpful. I think I like the usually-evil-but-sometimes-good monsters.

Missy: I will find that book, and I will read it. The only one I've read recently is Enchanted by Orson Scott Card. Thanks! :)

  7. Baba Yaga sends shivers up my spine only equal to some of the early Greek monsters in myths!

  8. Neat post! It made me think of a book, "Women Who Run With the Wolves" by Clarissa Pinkola Estes. In it, she writes about stories and myths of various cultures. The stories are centered on the women in each culture. It was a fascinating read, and an entertaining read.

Nice post. I found my way here via the A to Z linky-list. :-)

    1. I LOVE witches. I had a witch birthday cake when I turned 5, and I can't get enough of them when they're done well!
